Microbiology For Embalmers
The basic principles of microbiology related to the principles of funeral service education, especially as they pertain to embalming sanitation, morgue disinfection, public health, and embalming practice. The development and use of personal, professional and community hygiene and sanitation is discussed. The methods of transmission of infectious diseases, control procedures of these diseases with special emphasis on protection to the embalmer are described to differentiate between indigenous microorganisms and pathogens and/or opportunists causing diseases commonly associated with the human host and dead human remains. Pathology For Embalmers
This course in Pathology is designed to study the pathological conditions of the human body in its postmortem state and how those pathological conditions affect various parts of the body, with particular emphasis on those conditions which relate to or affect the embalming or restorative art process. Pathological conditions discussed will dictate the embalming procedures, methods and chemicals for preservation required by the embalmer. Accounting In Funeral Service
An introduction to basic principles of accounting theory. Applications to funeral home operations are made throughout financial statements and their analysis, worksheets, journalizing, receivables, payables, deferrals and accruals. Inventory cost models for funeral merchandise, is covered along with depreciation models and payroll accounting. Accounting proficiencies will enable the understanding of funeral service records and the funeral directors guidelines of funeral arrangements as prescribed by Federal Trade Commission Regulations rule on funeral industry practices. Sociology For Funeral Service
Sociology studies family structures, social structures, and the factors of change within those groups. This course relates those factors of change to the impacts of death and the relationship of the role of the funeral director in providing closure through funeral rites, ceremonies, customs, religion and rituals. Emphasis is placed on the cultural requirements and diversities of each family the funeral director is privileged to serve and an awareness of the changing social factors, which affect American Funeral Rites and the families served. This course covers the basic principles of sociology as they relate to funeral service. Emphasis is placed on family structures, social structures, and the factors of change that relate to funeral practices. Covered in the course are the basic principles of psychology and counseling as they relate to funeral service. Especially stressed are the psychological concepts in the areas of grief, bereavement, mourning, aftercare, and crisis intervention with emphasis on the role of the funeral practitioner.

Funeral Directing & Cremation
This course focuses on the basic duties, responsibilities, and expectations of those practicing funeral service. This includes notification of death, transfer of remains, conduct of the arrangement conference, prefunded/preplanned funerals, religious practices, fraternal funerals and military honors, shipment of remains, final disposition, aftercare, and regulatory and legislative compliance. The Cremation Curriculum is intended to give the student an overview of cremation topics including proper procedures, legal considerations, services, merchandise, trends, and the history of cremation. This course covers the construction and features caskets, outer burial containers, and other funeral related products such as cemetery headstones and markers. Merchandising examines methods of purchasing, pricing, display, and sale of funeral merchandise as well as services. Emphasis are placed on the component parts of funeral merchandise, including materials used, component part styles, finishes, dimensions/functions and pricing methods. General management techniques and theory as they relate to specific funeral home operational procedures and practices are emphasized. Management examines specific areas of funeral service practice and the managerial guidelines for the contemporary concepts of funeral service management as they relate to client families and community, staff personnel, and professional associates and associations/agencies. Psychology Of Funeral Service
The underlying value and relevance of this course for preparing the funeral director is that the symbolic and ritualistic aspects of the funeral have a significant impact upon the emotional experience of the bereaved. Emphasis on the grief process and its variations across individuals as influenced by psychological factors aids the funeral director in becoming a facilitating agent for effective mourning through personal interactions as well as the design and implementation of the funeral service. This course will also prepare the funeral director to know when to make a referral for mental health services. Business Communication
Computer and computer skills required. This course outlines the basic principles of effective communication skills as they relate to funeral service. Topics include: the communication process; language; nonverbal, verbal and written communication; listening; self-concept; public speaking; interpersonal, group, and business communication with an emphasis on soft skills; etiquette and the use of technology in funeral service practice. The course also covers the Federal Trade Commission and the Trade Regulation Rule on Funeral Industry Practices. The Funeral Rule requires that funeral providers disclose detailed information about prices and legal requirements to persons arranging funerals. The Rule also requires disclosure of specific itemized price information and prohibits specific unfair practices and misrepresentations. This course covers professional ethics and their relation to funeral service. Proper training in ethics increases awareness of the need to build trust and rapport. This knowledge will help funeral practitioners do what is proper and in the best interest of those they serve while maintaining the public trust. Mortuary And Business Law
The subject area guidelines for Funeral Service Law are designed to introduce the student to rights, duties, and responsibilities of the funeral service practitioner and funeral establishment; including but not limited to: state and federal laws, regulations and administrative agency law pertaining to funeral service including preneed; torts involving the dead human body and the funeral service practitioner; wills, estates, probate and related matters; cemeteries, crematories and issues related to final disposition; sources of law; the legal status of the dead human body; the right to control funeral arrangements and final disposition and liability for funeral expenses; and the legal aspects of being licensed to practice in funeral service (funeral director, embalmer, etc.). This course is a survey of the basic principles of business law as they relate to funeral service. Included are the bodies of law and the judicial system found in the United States of America, contracts, sales, consumer protection, bailments, employment, agency, business organizations, and insurance. Funeral providers as defined by the FTC in 1984 offer both service and merchandise. This outline considers both service and merchandise as the products provided by funeral service practitioners.
