Intro To Surgical Technology  

This course is designed to present the basic concepts and principles for developing skill competencies required for assisting in surgery, to introduce the student to the language of the operating room, gain information about the history and legal aspects of the profession, understand surgical services, and understand the role of the surgical technologist. This course also explores various human diversity issues relating to the care of surgical patients. Age, disability status, ethnicity, gender, race, religion and economic status will all be examined. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course.

Application of Aseptic Technique  

This course introduces students to the concept of sterile technique and how it is applied to preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative duties of a surgical technologist. The physiology of infection and the need for surgical intervention will be discussed. Clinical skills practiced in the laboratory classroom include hand washing, surgical hand scrub, gowning self and other, gloving self and other, establishing and maintaining a sterile field, and getting to the field successfully. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course.

Surgical Technology (SURG TC) 113  
Surgical Pharmacology  

This course will introduce the principles of the compounds and chemicals used in the surgical setting. General terminology and abbreviations associated with pharmacology and anesthesia will be discussed. This course defines the rationale for the use of specific drugs in surgical intervention. Drug action, uses and modes of administration used in the care of the surgical patient will be emphasized. Safe handling of surgical drugs and aseptic technique used for presentation to the field will be demonstrated and assessed in practicum lab. Surgical Intervention I  

A study of preoperative and intraoperative practice with focus on the following surgical specialties: General, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Genitourinary, Ophthalmic, ENT, Oral Maxillofacial, Plastic and Reconstructive, and Orthopedic surgery. The laboratory portion of the course allows the student to put into action the theory acquired in class. The student will participate in entry level mock surgery cases. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course.

Admission to the SURG TC Program/Plan 267 or SURG TC Program/Plan 268 and Grade of C or better in SURG TC 111, SURG TC 112 and BIOLOGY 227 and concurrent enrollment in SURG TC 116.

Surgical Intervention II  

A study of preoperative and intraoperative practice with focus on the following surgical specialties: Peripheral Vascular, Cardiac, Pediatric and Neurosurgery. The lab portion of the course allows the student to put into action the theory acquired in class. The student will participate in entry level mock surgery cases. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course.

Surgical Intervention IV  

A study of surgical procedures with emphasis on thoracic, vascular and cardiac surgery. There is also emphasis placed on resume writing, job placement, interviewing and negotiating in the job market. Clinical Practicum I  

A clinical course designed to provide opportunities for the student to synthesize and apply the skills gathered in the previous program courses. The student will be able to perform the tasks and duties of an entry level Surgical Technologist. Students will be additionally instructed on issues that arise before, during and after surgical intervention. student will be assigned to a clinical site in both the Sterile Processing Department and the Surgery Department. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course.

Students will be additionally instructed on issues that arise before, during and after surgical intervention. Students will take a more independent role during the surgical procedure. Exam Review & Professional Success  

This course will prepare Surgical Technology students for the National Board of Surgical Technologists and Surgical First Assistants and will include participation in the national board exam at the end of the course. This course is designed to provide laboratory training and the application of principles required for infection prevention and control in the Central Service Department in a healthcare facility. This course will offer laboratory experience in instrument assembly, cleaning, disinfecting, decontamination, sterilization, Standard precautions and Universal precautions. Sterile Processing Clinical Practicum II  

This course is designed to present the basic concepts and principles for developing clinical skills and competencies required for infection prevention and control in the central service department in a health care facility. The student will attend clinical rotations four (4 to 5) days per week, time ranging from, 5 hours to 7.5 hours per day. This course will offer knowledge in cleaning, disinfecting, decontamination, sterilization, preparing and packaging, storage and distribution, quality assurance, equipment parameters, Load documentation, Standard precautions, and Universal precautions. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline are part of the course.

Professional Readiness  

This course is designed to help the Sterile Processing Technology student transition into the professional role of a Central Service Technician. It includes preparation for employment, attaining certification, and maintaining certification status. This capstone course is an opportunity for students to demonstrate that they have achieved the goals and objectives established for the program.
